Fossler Mary Fossler Among the larger landholders and prominent farmers of Hardin county who deserve mention as representatives of their locality in a work like this is Henry F. Fossler, who was born on October 4, 1844, in Ogle county, Illinois, the son of John A. and Sarah (Kimble) Fossler, who were natives of Pennsylvania. His father was born on August 30, 1821, and died on November 3, 1909; his mother was born on October 6, 1823, and died on January 20, 1898. Henry Fossler's grandfather Kimble was a soldier in the war of 1812, and his great-grandafther served in the Revolution and met the Hessians, of whose coming to America to help the British put down American independence he told many incidents. John A. Fossler moved to Ogle county from Pennsylvania in 1840, driving through in a wagon, and reached his destination on the first of June. He was married after reaching Ogle county. Here he purchased a farm on which he operated a saw mill for a number of years, then sold the farm and mill and removed to Hardin county, Iowa, where he purchased a grist and saw mill at Hardin City. This he operated until 1875, when he sold out and bought a farm of two hundred and forty acres on section 16, Aetna township, where he lived for nine years and engaged in general farming. Then he moved to Ackley and bought a residence, where he lived for twenty-six years and there died. He and his wife are buried at Ackley cemetery. They were members of the Evangelical church. John A. Fossler cast his first vote for President for John C. Fremont, and ever afterwards was a loyal member of the Republican party. There were seven children in the family of John F. Fossler, six of whom are living: James died at the age of sixteen; those living are Mary, now Mrs. H. C. Greer; Charles; Emma E., now Mrs. William Hays; Lydia, now Mrs. F. Whitney; Isaac and Henry F. Henry F. Fossler remained with his father until he was twenty-five (FOSSLER, HENRY F DANIELS, Candace 1868-10-20 / 64 STEPHENSON...Illinois marriage index), when he married Candace Daniels, the daughter of John and Candace Daniels, of Stephenson county, Illinois. This marriage took place in Illinois, and Mrs. Fossler died on July 11, 1875. To this union were born two sons and one daughter. The sons, Milton and Millard, are deceased, the daughter, Candace Bertha, is now the wife of W. A. Wickham. Mr. Fossler was married a second time on December 20, 1882, to Mary C. Mogle, the daughter of William and Melinda Mogle, of Hardin county, whose farm adjoins that of Mr. Fossler. Her father was born in Pennsylvania, her mother in Stephenson county, Illinois, and they came to this county in 1869, and purchased the farm on which they now reside. Henry Fossler on first coming to this county helped his father in the mill, but in 1875 he moved to a farm of eighty acres, to which he soon added eighty more, and then sold that quarter section and bought his present home farm of two hundred and forty acres, to which he has added other land until he now owns five hundred and twenty acres, the most of which is good tillable land, well improved. He also owns a half section of land in Texas and is one of the stockholders of a brick and tile manufacturing plant in Austin, Minnesota, which is doing a very extensive business. Mr. Fossler is an up-to-date farmer. He keeps a large number of stock and feeds for the market. His farm is in a fine state of cultivation and well drained, having three miles of tiling on it. Mr. Fossler is a well known and respected citizen of the county, very enterprising, and a believer in helping in evey way to advance the progress of his county. In politics he is a stanch Tepublican and has been director in his school district for twenty years. His wife is a member of the Methodist church, which he also attends and helps to support. By his second marriage Mr. Fossler is the father of ten children, all living except one born on April 11, 1892, which died at six months. Those living, with the dates of their birth, are: John W., in 1883; Carrie L., April 29, 1885; Henry Morton, March 23, 1888; Edna M., January 30, 1890; Josie M., December 30, 1893; Wells K., August 12, 1896; Gladys A., June 30, 1899; Nellie Ruth, September 20, 1903; Milo W., July 23, 1906. By the way, his first wife's mother, Candace Sarah Emery Daniels, sued Henry's father for return of money used to help built his mill. I have the paperwork.
