Death of Jerome Bailey

Jerome Bailey, an old settler of Garner, passes away at the Soldier’s Home at Marshalltown last Friday. The remains were brought to the home of his son, Edgar, at Belmond and then brought here on Sunday. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon under the auspices of the American Legion Post of Belmond. About twenty members of the Garner post were in attendance beside a number from Crystal Lake. Rev. C. H. VanMetre preached the sermon. Following is the obituary notice read at the service.

Jerome Bailey was born in the state of New York on Dec. 3, 1841, and died Apr. 11, 1924 at the Soldier’s Home, Marshalltown, Iowa. He enlisted in the 13th Wisconsin Infantry of the Civil War and served till nearly the close of the War.

On Christmas day 1866 he was married to Martha Kerr of Belvidere, Ill. To them were born 4 children: Jesse, now Mrs. Butler of North English; Edgar, of Belmond; Clarence; and Helen, now Mrs. LaPlount, of Crystal Lake, Iowa.

Mr. Bailey came to Iowa in 1868 settling near Corwith, but afterwards the family lived in Chickasaw Co., at Baileys’ Grove, Hickory Grove and lastly Garner, where the wife and mother passed away 27 years ago this April.

For the past few years Mr. Bailey made his home with one of his daughters, Mrs. LaPlount of Crystal Lake. Last August on account of failing health he was taken to the Soldiers’ Home at Marshalltown where he lived only 8 months.

He was a member of the M. E. Church for many years, and was a faithful and devout Christian. He has joined those gone on before, and today we think of him as having “finished the course, fought the good fight” and wearing the crown.
