OBITUARY
BERT M. GRIMSLEY
In the south part of Strand parish near Stavanger, Norway, there is a place called Grimsley. This homestead has been in the Grimsley family for generations. There the Grimsley grandparents lived and also the parents, Martin and Elizabeth Grimsley. Bert Grimsley was the second in the family, the others were Lars, Thomas, Martin and Bertha.
On the Grimsley homestead Bert Grimsley was born Nov. 15, 1865. He was baptized and confirmed in the Old Strand church. He spent his youth at home and in the community, mostly engaged in carpenter work.
March, 1890, when 25 years old, he left for America, arriving in Huxley, Iowa, April 23, 1890. He made his home at Huxley for some four years, after which he moved to near Randall, Iowa. In this community he was engaged in carpenter work. In 1899 he bought a small farm one mile east of Randall, where he lived for 39 years. He sold this farm in 1938 and bought a house in Randall, where he has lived since.
March 24, 1894, he was united in marriage to Gurina Fatland of Huxley. To this union two have preceded him in death, Louis, who died March 18, 1924, and Miller, who died October 27, 1941 at the age of 45 years. Those who survive are Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Ina Satre of Stanhope, also a foster son, Barnard Fatland of Kenyon, Minn.
Mr. and Mrs. Grimsley joined the Elim church in 1894. In this church the Grimsleys were faithful members for many years. Mr. Grimsley served as trustee and deacon for many years. He was faithful in making calls to the aged and sick people in the church.
The year ---- became a memorial year for the Grimsleys. That year both were converted and found peace with God. In this faith they lived and died.
Mrs. Grimsley passed away Jan. 18, 1941. Due to a severe heart attack Mr. Grimsley died instantly Thursday morning, Feb. 26, 1942, at the age of 76 years and three months.
The Grimsleys have a host of friends who never will forget their hospitality and kindness. They were real friends to all.
Funeral services were held from the home and the Elim church on Monday, March 2, where Rev. G. O. Paulsrud officiated, assisted by Revs. Buland, Monson and Oppedal. A large audience was present to pay their last tribute to this Christian friend. The Elim quartet furnished the music. Flowers and $42.00 were given in memory. Pallbearers were B. A. Anderson, P. J. Okland, Chris Teig, Andrew Mickelson, E. M. Erickson and B. M. Teigland. Interment was made at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Randall.
