Amanda Nichols was born 27 Feb 1849 in Georgetown, Grant Co., Wisconsin. Her parents were Daniel Turner Nichols (1819-1903) and Sarah "Sally" Francis ( 1823-1892). She died on 1 April 1932 in Webster City, Hamilton Co., Iowa at her home on Merritt Street.
Amanda's grandparents were Everts Nichols (1793-1823) and Elizabeth Turner (1786-1847), Amos Francis (1791-1853 and Isabella Ann Dowd (1797-1851).
Her great grandparents were David Nichols (1763-1848) and Naomi Newton(1761-1837). On her mothers side Amos Francis (1757-1806) Rev War and Sarah Curtis (1762-1820). Also Samuel Miles Dowd (1763-1845) Rev War and Huldah Royce (1770-1853)Amanda had three sisters and two brothers: Isabelle Francis Nichols (1847-1906) married David Eastman, Sarah Jane Nichols ( 1852-19324)married John Bennetto and they also lived in Webster City.
Mary Emily Nichols (1859-1942) was never married and lived in WI with her father after her mother died. Charles William Nichols (1850-1931) died in WI and James Henry Nichols (1859-1941) also stayed in Grant Co., WI.Amanda was a school teacher and she met and married the Superintendent Hughes Herbert Johnson on 12 Nov 1877 in Georgetown, Grant Co., WI.
They had 2 daughters Grace Mabel and Blanche Carrye before her husband died in 1887.Amanda was an independent, intelligent woman who was involved in the GAR and was a suffragette. She raised two little girls by herself without the support of a husband who was taken early in a time when it was difficult to manage without one.
She was also a charter member of the Church of Christ in Webster City, involved in the Women's Relief Corp and OES.
