Wayne H. Betts, 91, son of George and Luella (Combs) Betts, was born October 23, 1920 in Orange Township near Coon Rapids, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, December 24, 2011, at the New Homestead in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
Wayne was born and raised on a farm south of Coon Rapids. He graduated from Guthrie Center High School. On April 6, 1940, he married Helen Tallman in Princeton, Missouri. To this union three children were born, Gary, Janet, and Wanda. They farmed from 1941 until 1959 before going to work at the Monteith Elevator in 1960, where Helen was the bookkeeper. In 1968, they purchased the elevator. In 1976, they sold the elevator.
He enjoyed RV camping, fishing, playing cards, visiting with friends and family, playing the guitar, harmonica, and singing in a band. He also enjoyed traveling to such places as the Western United States, Hawaii, Alaska, the Far East, Bahamas, and Canada. They spent 28 total winters in South Texas. He was a resident of the New Homestead.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Guthrie Center.
Wayne is survived by his son, Gary Betts of Weslaco, TX; daughters, Janet (Rob) Reff of Tucson, AZ and Wanda (Dan) Davis of Loveland, CO; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen in 2010; sister, Ruth Menefee; and brothers, Rolland, Merle, and Arnie Betts.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2011, at the First Christian Church, Guthrie Center. Burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday in Union Cemetery, Guthrie Center. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 28, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m., with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. until 9:50 a.m. at Twigg Funeral Home, Guthrie Center.
