Warren E. Sunds
November 1, 1937 - December 1, 2011Warren Sunds, 74, passed away December 1, 2011 at The New Homestead in Guthrie Center, Iowa. He was born on November 1st, 1937 to Morten and Marie (Brekenfeld) in Washington County, Nebraska and moved to Casey, Iowa with his family when he was 4 years old. Warren was baptized in Nebraska and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran church, and has been a lifelong member, holding different offices, and working with the youth groups He attended Thompson #6 country school, and then entered Casey Public School, graduating in 1956. He played both basketball and football in high school.
Warren loved farming and raising Purebred Herefords. He worked for many different friends and farmers as a young boy. He also loved to hunt and formed many friendships during these hunts. On
April 6, 1957, Warren married his high school sweetheart Marlene Kriens of Fontanelle, IA. They lived in Des Moines while Warren worked at Western Tool Company and John Deere before enlisting in the United States Army. He was stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and Ft. Ord, California. Upon returning from service, Marlene and Warren formed a partnership with his parents on the farm where they moved later. In 1979, Warren and Marlene started a new business venture called Sunds Custom Fencing and moved North of Casey where they set up the business and built a new home. Warren was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in December of 1993 and due to failing health sold the business in 1999. On June 8, 2008 Warren sustained a chemical burn on the farm and spent 2 1/2 weeks at the burn unit in Iowa City and then 60 plus days at the Guthrie Center Hospital, it was at this time that Warren and Marlene bought a home in Guthrie Center. They lived there with Marlene as his caregiver until he entered the New Homestead Care Facility in Guthrie Center February 13, 2011.
Warren and Marlene have been blessed with 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Sons: Martin (Beth) Sunds of Van Meter, LTC. Benett (Shannon) Sunds of Ft. Knox, Kentucky, daughter, Carrie (Tim) O’Brien of Lake Panorama, Iowa. Grandchildren: Haley (UNI-Cedar Falls) and Jared Sunds of Van Meter, Jessica and Garrett Sunds of Ft. Knox, Kentucky and Sierra and Saige O’Brien of Lake Panorama, Iowa. Also surviving are sisters: Darlene Bassett and Merle of Casey, Kay Olson, of Corvallis, Oregon, sister-in-law Mardelle Sorensen and husband Oliver of Bridgewater, Iowa, many nephews, nieces, cousins and God children. Preceding Warren in death were his parents, brother-in-laws, Dick White, Don Warner, Roy Olson, and nephew Randy White. Sister Marilyn Warner of Casey passed four hours after Warren.

Burial will be at 9:30 AM on Tuesday December 6, 2011.St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, Iowa.
