Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Knapp, the subjects of this sketch, were both natives of New York state, he being born at Attica, March 12, 1830, a son of Henry and Esther (Moses) Knapp; she being born in Green county, New York, and a daughter of Norman and Elizabeth (Miller) Conley. They came west to Indiana in childhood, where they were united in married July 29, 1852. To
them were born ten children, eight boys and two girls. Seven children, six boys and one girl, still survive them.

They came west in the spring of 1867, locating in Guthrie county near the place where they have, excepting four years, 1870 to 1874, continuously resided. Mr. Knapp was a member of the Twenty-third Indiana battery during the war, and also Tracy post, G. A. R., of this place, and has held places of public trust many times. For honor, and uprightness of character, Grandpa and Grandma Knapp as they were familiarly known, were respected by all who knew them. Mr. Knapp passed from this life Feb. 11, 1909, aged 78 years and 11 months, his good wife surviving him only six weeks, she having died March 26, 1909, aged 76 years and 1 month.
