Ulyysses Grant Haughtelin born 3 Aug 1866 in Panora, guthrie Co. IA. When his mother died, he stayed with the Thompson Cline's in Panora, IA until he was grown. In Feb 1882, he went to Chicago, IL where his cousin, Wilbur Brecunier lived, settling there until Feb 1883, when he went to Sac City, IA where his Uncle levi lived. from there, he went to Panora, IA until 1885 when he left for Tulare City, CA. He arrived 17 Oct 1885 and stayed there until December when he moved back to Panora, IA. He settled there until March 1888. He then, went to Washington until Christmas of 1888. Then, it was back to Panora, IA. On 25 Sept 1889 at Panora he married Chloe Belle Smith, daughter of Jackson Smith and Lavancha Lenora Moon. He remained in Panora, IA until 22 Oct 1890 when he started with his wife and one child, with a team and wagon, for Nickerson, Kansas, arriving on 12 Nov 1890. They lived with Abraham Haughtelin on his farm until 11 Sept 1899, when with his wife and three children, he traveled to Olympia, Washington by train, arriving 15 Sept 1899. Because of Chloe's bronchitis, on 20 Feb 1900, they moved to Sunnyside, WA. their daughters rode horseback to school there, a distance of about five miles. They are mentioned in Roscoe Sheller's book "Blow-Sand" as having typhoid fever and nothing to eat in the house.
Ulysses Haughtelin died 26 Oct 1927 on a load of sugar beets he was taking to the sugar beet factory in Sunnyside, WA at 61 years old of a heart attack. Buried in Sunnyside, CA. (There are fond memories of the old homestad smelling of sagebrush, that they burned for fuel. Also, of helping Grampa weed his sugar beets and alll. Mother Pearl for wept over his death until, she too, was gone.)Chloe Belle Smith was born 17 Oct 1870 in Des Moines, Polk Co. IA. She worked very hard for the families of Sunnyside, WA. She loved to work and when she went blind, she wept because she could not see to can food and so the work she loved to do. She lived in the home of her daughter Pearl, the last 15 years of her life and was called "wee Grannie" by her great granchildren. I remember her crying silently as my mother (Pearl) was getting beans ready to can. My mother put a big pan of beans in Grandma's lap and asked her to get them ready them strung , cut and ready for the jars. Grandma hummed happily as she worked on them and if we had to pull a few strings out of our teeth and eat irregularly cut beans, it certainly didn't hurt us a bit. She had glaucoma and cataracts and also was very deaf from quite a young age. Her father, Jackson F. Smith married Lavancha Lenora Moon 21 Dec 1859, in Iowa Co. IA.
Chloe Belle Haughtelin married 2nd to Henry Berk 26 Mar 1930 at Sunnyside, WA. Henry was born 20 June 1864 Hisser, Germany. Chloe died 19 Nov 1957 and is buried at Sunnyside, WA.
Children: Pearl Ella Haughtelin b. 20 Jun 1890 Panora, IA.d. 22 Nov 1963 Yakima, WA. m. Frank Heaton 11 Nov 1911, Sunnyside, WA. Frank was born 1888 in Nebraska, div after 6 years. No children. m2nd Albert Hugh Kennedy 30 Dec 1918 Yakima, WA. al was born at chandler, WA 3 Sept 1895, a mechanic and electrician and foreman of the State Hiway Dept. Garage at union Gap, WA. his parents, Hugh and janet (mcCreadie) Kennedy. Children of Bert & Pearl Kennedy: Janet Ellen, Albert Hugh, Jessie Belle, kathleen Pearl, Virginia May, John Delbert, Robert and Sharon Ann kennedy.
