An Operation Reveals Bullet Lost in Man's Body for 32 Years

Carrying a bullet in his intestines for 32 years, to have it found and removed during an operation for appendicitis is not given to many men to experience.

But this happened to Dick Shannon of Grundy Center, who was operated in a Waterloo hospital last week.

During the Spanish-American war in 1898, Mr. Shannon was acting as a plumber's mate on a boat that went to Cuba. He was not enlisted, but was on shore leave from his ship with a companion, when in a brawl he was shot twice by a Cuban, both bullets entering his body.

One of the leaden pellets was removed, but the other was not located, and Mr. Shannon went on his way to recovery, still carrying it in his body.

While the operation was being performed at the Waterloo hospital it was discovered that the missing bullet had lodged in the cartilages of the intestines and become encysted in such a way that its presence was almost unnoticed. In the making of the incision attendant to the appendix operation, the bullet was found and removed without trouble.

Bullet Lodged in Appendix of R. E. Shannon and Was Removed

While in Cuba during the Spanish American War, 33 years ago, R. E. Shannon of Grundy Center was shot twice. He brought bullets lodged in him back to this country. One of the bullets was removed a short time after. An effort was made to locate and remove the other bullet at the time but it could not be found. The missing bullet made no trouble until about a week ago when Mr. Shannon was taken violently sick with appendicitis. He was taken to a hospital in Waterloo where his appendix was removed. Within the appendix was the missing bullet. It had traveled about the body and it finally took lodging in the human anatomy's tenderest spot and it could not long hide its presence.

Mr. Shannon stood the operation well and will be over it in about the usual time.

Try To Locate R. E. Shannon; Away Two Years

An effort is being made to locate R. E. Shannon, formerly of Grundy Center, who left here about two years ago and who has not been heard from since.

Shannon was about 60 years old. He was a man of irregular and intemperate habits and it is believed that he may have died or have been killed since he left here.

He left some property in Grundy Center and it was not believed that he had much money when he left. Those who knew him best feel sure that he would have returned to possess some of his property if he were still living.

The property consists of a number of residence lots and a small deposit of money in the Grundy National Bank. The property is valued at $600. Shannon has no known relatives.

A petition has been filed in the office of the district court for the appointment of a guardian to take care of the Shannon property. The petition was filed by Wm. Groote.

If Shannon does not return to claim his property or if no relative files a claim, the property will revert to the county after a seven year period.

Class of The Methodist Church of
Grundy Center, Iowa; The Board of
County Supervisors of Grundy County,
Iowa; Delbert Hopkins & Lillian Hop-
kins of Grundy Center, Iowa; and the
unknown Heirs at Law of R. E. Shan-
non, deceased:

You and each of you are hereby
notified that there has been presented
to said Court and is now on file in
the office of the Clerk of said Court,
the petition of Wm. Groote, duly veri-
fied, alleging that the said R. E.
Shannon was on the 22nd day of
March, 1938, and had been for many
years prior thereto, a resident of
Grundy Center, Grundy County, Iowa,
that early in the year 1938 the said
R. E. Shannon was committed from
Grundy County, Iowa, as an insane
patient, to the Independence State
Hospital, from which he escaped on
March 22, 1938, and he has not been
heard of or from since that time;
that said absentee was discharged
from said Independence State Hospi-
tal, in his absence, as Not Cured un-
der date of July 9, 1938; and that he,
the said R. E. Shannon, has, without
known cause, absented himself from
his usual place of residence and has
concealed his whereabouts from his
family or acquaintances for a period
of more than seven (7) years.

That, at the time of so absenting
himself, he was the owner of a cer-
tain mortgage on real estate, situated
in Grundy Center, Grundy County,
Iowa, which has since been paid to
Wm. Groote, the Guardian appointed
for the absentee, and there now re-
mains in the hands of the said guar-
dian the sum of $467.05; that the
wife of said absentee died about Oc-
tober of 1938, and that said absentee
left a last will and testament, or an
instrument purporting to be such, in
which Wm. Groote is named as Exec-
utor without bond, and the only bene-
ficiaries therein are as follows, to-
wit:
Wm. Groote of Grundy Center,
Iowa;
The Methodist Church of Grundy
Center, Iowa;
The Alpha Harmony Class of The
Methodist Church of Grundy
Center, Iowa; and
Delbert Hopkins and Lillian Hop-
kins of Grundy Center, Iowa.

It is further alleged in said petition
that the absentee owned no other
property, and that the beneficiaries
above named are the only persons en-
titled to his estate, if he is dead, so far
as known to said petitioner.
Said petitioner prays that adminis-
tration on the estate of said absentee
be granted, that the instrument in
writing, purporting to be his last will
and testament, be admitted to pro-
bate as such, and that said petitioner
be appointed executor thereof, with-
out bond, all the same as though he
were known to be dead.

You are further notified that the
court has fixed the 27th day of May,
1946, it being during the regular April
Term, 1946, of said court to be held
at Grundy Center, Grundy County,
Iowa, at 10:00 o'clock A.M., as the
time for the hearing on said petition,
at which time the court will hear the
proof offered to sustain said peti-
tion, and if satisfied of the truth of
the facts set forth herein concerning
said absentee will order administra-
tion of his estate as though he were
known to be dead and will make such
other orders as may be appropriate.
At the time and place mentioned you
or any of you may appear and show
cause why the prayer of said petition
should not be granted.

It is also ordered that this notice
be published once each week for eight
consecutive weeks in The Grundy
Register, a weekly newspaper pub-
lished in and having a general circu-
lation in said county of Grundy, and
that personal service thereof be made
on all the persons to whom this notice
is addressed residing in the State of
Iowa in the manner and for the length
of time as is required for the service
of original notices, proof of which
service shall, at the expiration of the
period indicated above, be filed with
the petition in said cause.

The foregoing notice was prescribed
by order of the court on the 27 day
of March, A.D. 1946.
