Three Members of Lincoln Center Church Over 80
Mrs. Christ Pabst, living northeast of Grundy Center, has reached the age of 80 years and will be 81 in March. She came to this community about 60 years ago. She immigrated from Vellage, Germany, and after the 60 years of life spent in Grundy county is still able to do the general work of a good housekeeper. As a kind and affectionate lady of her age she finds herself very often surrounded not only by the large number of relatives, but also by the many friends of the neighborhood. She is living with her son, R. C. Pabst on the farm, the old home place.
Mr. John Graves is another of the trio. The Graves family have been close neighbors to the Pabst family for a long time, and these "young folks" visit each other quite frequently. It's a delight to see them get together. The handshake, the smiling faces, the conversation--it's all so unique. Mr. Graves has lived in this community since 1886. Mr. Graves is going to be 82 years in March. He has been a member of the Lincoln Center church board for 31 years and has done much for the congregation through his service. He is still an active elder in that church and not missing a service.
Mr. U. H. Petersen is the senior of the trio. He is very widely known in this county, and lived in Iowa since 1868. At that time Mr. Petersen came to Ackley. He helped to build the Ackley-Hampton and the Eldora-Marshalltown railroads. In 1870 he started farming where we now find the little station of Abbott. It is quite interesting to hear him tell all the experiences of those years. The place where he started farming was soon sold to the railroad company and he had to move on the prairie, etc. The times were so hard that it took him a number of years to pay for his first team of horses. Mr. Petersen is now 86 years old and enjoys life as much as any of us. He has served the Lincoln Center church as elder to the end of 1924, when his wish was to retire. We hope that these three may be with us for a number of years yet, and that they may be blessed with peace and happiness.
