Mrs. Byrd Meyers Will Be 95 March 5
Mrs. Byrd Meyers of the Ivester Community will be 95 years old next Thursday, March 5. She was born to William and Mary Sheller Miller on March 5, 1875, on the same farm where she now lives with her daughter and son-in-law, Maryann and Tom Reeder and grandson, Doyle.
Byrd spent her childhood in this community and went to school at Melrose No. 2 (Sheller Cemetery School). She later taught at this same school after attending Normal School at Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Byrd Miller and Stanley Meyers were married December 27, 1899, and the next spring they went to Cando, North Dakota, to prove-up on a homestead claim. The fall of 1900 they drove by covered wagon from their homestead in North Dakota to Kossuth County, Iowa, taking three weeks to make the trip. After farming in Kossuth and Grundy county for several years they moved to Grundy Center where Mr. Meyers carried mail for 2 years.
The Meyers' family left Grundy Center in 1909 and returned to their homestead in North Dakota where they farmed for eight years.
In March of 1917, they moved back to Iowa to the home farm in Melrose township to help care for her invalid mother. After the death of her parents, the Meyers bought the home farm where she now lives and has spent 78 years of her life.
Mr. and Mrs. Meyers celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in December of 1949. Mr. Meyers passed away on April 11, 1954.
The Miller Park is located on a part of the original farm, being named for a sister, Ida, who was the first white child born in Melrose township. Mrs. P. K. Albright (Cynthia), Mrs. Frances Button (Fannie), Mrs. Fred Draper (Lillie) and D. O. Miller, all deceased, were sisters and brother of Byrd. Ida and Clara died early in life.
Aunt Byrd, as she is known to all, is still alert and active helping with the work in the home, reading and working with crafts which she enjoys giving to her many friends who visit her.
She is a long time member of the Ivester Church. For a number of years she worked in the Cradle Roll Department of the church and attended regularly until she broke a hip and was not able to get around outside.
Her many relatives and friends wish her a happy birthday and good health in the years to come.
No special observance is planned this year, but cards and callers would be welcomed by Aunt Byrd.
