Neessen's Hold Reunion

The descendants of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Neessen held their annual reunion at Edgewater Park in Albert Lea, Minn., on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Those present were Mrs. Jennie Reeves, and Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Larson of Minneapolis, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Neesen of Lake Crystal, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Louis Neesen of Winthrop, Minn., Mrs. W. T. Neesen, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Neesen, Mr. and Mrs. Carter Zwyers and son Bernard, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schachtile of Wellsburg, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Meier, Esther and Vincent of Grundy Center, Ia., and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Neesen and daughters Lois and Frances of Tipton, Iowa.

The founder of this branch of the Neesen clan, Thomas W. Neesen, emigrated from Logabirum, Ostfriesland, Germany in 1856, when a youth of seventeen. He came to Stevenson Co., Ill., where he made his home with an uncle, Ludwig Neesen, for two years. In 1853[sic] he went back to Germany returning the following year with his father, brothers, and sisters who located in Stevenson county, Illinois.

During the Civil war T. W. Neesen was employed by the United States government. His work was with the engineers corps, re-building railroads in the border states. Mr. Neesen could relate many interesting anecdotes concerning those days.

In March, 1867, he was united in marriage to Mary Roos at Ridott, Ill. Shortly after their marriage they, with other relatives, emigrated in covered wagons to Ackley, Iowa.

In June, 1868, Mr. and Mrs. Neesen and son Walter T. moved to Steamboat Rock, Ia., where they conducted a general store for nearly thirty years, and a creamery for ten years.

Mr. Neesen passed away at Steamboat Rock in 1908, and Mrs. Neesen followed her husband in death in 1913 at Wellsburg, Iowa.

Mr. Neesen was a son of Wolbrecht Neesen, one of three brothers who emigrated from Germany to the United States. These brothers were Ludwig, Wolbrecht and Heiko.

Ludwig Neesen left no descendants, but there are many descendants of Wolbrecht and Heiko residing in the middle west, California, and possibly other states at the present time.
