MERRITT MONROE DIES SUDDENLY

This community was shocked Friday with the news of the death of Merritt Monroe, a popular young farmer in this community. Merritt and his wife were driving along the street in Nebraska City, Friday morning when he was stricken with a heart attack, the first he had ever experienced. He slumped over the wheel as his car struck the back of a car which was parked at the curb. Mrs. Monroe, who was at his side, was helpless in that death was almost instant.

Merritt S. Monroe, the second child of R.D. and Vesta Monroe, was born in Fremont County, May 10, 1902, and passed away Dec. 15, 1950, at the age of 48 years, 7 months and 5 days.

He was educated in the schools of this vicinity, in different districts where his parents lived. He was always known as a good boy and in each community that the family lived, there are many friends who respected him and are saddened by his sudden passing.

He was united in marriage on Feb. 5, 1926, to Laura V. Mortimore at Sidney, Iowa. They have worked together through the years, interested in farming, and their work has brought for them a happy, successful life together, as well as a fine home. He was a devoted son, a loving husband and a good neighbor. In 1946 they were able to purchase a farm in Madison township, which has been their happy home since that time. He united with the Cox Chapel Methodist church in 1938. Survivors include his wife, his mother, two sisters, Mrs. Verna Kuhns of Sidney and Mrs. Irene Bradley of Hamburg; four brothers, Charley of Malvern, Lester of Craig, Mo., Russell and Leonard of Sidney and a wide circle of friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Cecil C. Latta. Burial was in the Hamburg cemetery.
