It’s Past & Present

OAKLAND VALLEY-is a small village laid out by Jess R. Dodd, on Section 28, Township 90, range 22, in a beautiful location on the west bank of the Iowa River. The town formerly boasted a store and a steam saw mill, but no has neither. One hotel, the “Oakland Valley House,” kept by Levi Bigelow, who is also Postmaster

Church organizations-Methodist, Rev. Mr. Hamilton; Baptist, Rev. Mr. Stillson; and Congregationalist, Rev. Mr. Harrison.

Across the river from Oakland Valley resides John I. Popejoy, well-known throughout this portion of Iowa as an extensive cattle dealer. He has a fine farm of about 1,500 acres. “Pope,” as he is familiarity called by his multitude of friends, is noted for his generosity and hospitality. If any man ever gets by his house after sundown, it is by sheer accident. He moved to his present location from Fayette County, Ohio, in the spring of 1854. He was last year President of the Franklin County Agricultural Society, and is at present Supervisor from Oakland Township.
