Neil Fullerton (1831-1918)

James and Janet (Murschie) Fullerton were originally from Scotland where four of their children - James, Mary, Archibald and Jane - were born to them. In 1829 they immigrated to Quebec, Canada, where Mr. Fullerton took up the blacksmith trade. Five other children - Peter, Neil, Charles, Janet and John - were born to them. Neil, born December 10, 1831, in Iverness, Quebec, began working on farms in New Hampshire until 1854 when he returned to Canada to work in the lumber business. In 1857 he married Mary Kerr and took up farming in Bedford New Hampshire. He returned to the lumber business in Canada in 1863 and after eight years moved with his family to Cerro Gordo County, where he rented a farm untl 1876. That year he purchased a farm on the Owen-Rockford township line, where he remained until his death, April 29, 1918.

Neil and Mary Fullerton had eight sons and one daugher - John, James, Charles A., Peter G., Neil A., Robert, Angus (Doc), Henry J. (Dick), and Nettie (Jeanette). The family was remarkable for their musical talents. The brothers were a double quartet with the sister as accompanist. Robert continued his musical endeavors, studying in Italy and teaching music at Iowa State University.
