Michael Gappa can be found on the 1870 census living in Windsor township, Fayette County. He is listed as a farm laborer born in Prussia as was his wife, Antonia. At that point, had two children, Frank age 12 and Alexander age 9 months. In 1880 they are living in Eden township and Michael is listed as a farmer. There are now six children, Frank (age 21), Alexander (age 10), Anna (age 9), Eliza (age 5), Peter (age 4) and Bernhard (age 3). Frank is listed with his parents and again with his wife and her children in Auburn township. Wife Mary, age 23 was born in Wisconsin and children were Martin Meyer age 3 (step-son) and Mary Meyer age 1 (step-daughter). Mary Gappa is buried at St. Luke Catholic Cemetery in St. Lucas in Auburn township.
Maria Schmitt Gappe, b. 6 June 1856 - 30 Nov 1883.
By 1900 the family had moved on to Nebraska where Michael and Antonia were living in Howard County, Nebraska with sons Frank (Wd. b. Jan 1859), Peter (b. Dec 1876) and Margaret born May 1883 in Iowa, granddaughter and daughter of Frank if birthdate is correct.
Hope this helps ...
