I have recently discovered via a son-in-law's biography that a grandfather whom I had always assumed had died in Michigan (where all my family ended up)...actually had a California & Iowa adventure in his twilight years.

Here is the information I have on my ancestor:
Everett (alt. Averitt, Evrit, Avrit) A. Hawley b 1805 E. Bloomfield, Ontario, New York, married Lucy E. Newton (b. 1810, no parent info) same place, about 1830 and removed with her to Michigan in 1831, where they were early settlers, farming. Removed to California after 1850, spending six years before moving to Richfield, Fayette, Iowa, where he appeared on the 1860 census and died in 1867. His wife was Lucy Newton, b 1810. I don't know if she accompanied him to California and Iowa.

The son-in law was in Fayette County with him from 1860-1867. He is John V. Armstrong, born Seneca County NY 1823. His wife was Susan A. Hawley.
