I suggest checking the following from the Online California death index(NorCal Genealogy Online Genealogy Databases)
MOULTON CLARENCE EDWARD
dod 11 06 1942
LOS ANGELES
M
0
Birth 01 15 1857
IOWA
DULEY Mother maiden name
MOULTON Father's name
A California death certificate is available. If this is the correct Clarence more information may be available from census data. Be sure to check Familysearch.org for free data.
Nelson died in Fayette and is buried there and his death record may be available as well as an Obit from the Fayette County Genealogical Society. As he was born in Canada a birth record is likely not available but location of birth may be available from Obit or other newspaper article.
If Nelson was age 28 or so and present in Iowa by 1860 he may have been a CW vet in which case records could name his place of birth. I have a family of ex Canadians who joined up in Fayette County!
Another approach is to look for other relatives who may lend additional information- that is collateral research.
