My Great Grandmother Lucy (Darling) Hammond had six children according to census records. These children were born between 1857 (Sophronia-her first) and last,my grandfather(Frank)was in 1882. Lucy's first husband was William W. Hammond, who died in the Civil War.
She shows as wife of Frank Wickham in the 1880 census. My grandfather's biological father was Frank Wickham, who was the son of Reuben and Ellen Wickham The elder Wickham's were considered pioneer settlers in Auburn Township.
Now, the question! I cannot find any records of these four missing children. My guess is that they died as infants. There are a couple of tintypes in Lucy's album which may be of dead twins. In all probability, these probably are Frank Wickham's children but I cannot find any cemetary records as to the final resting places of these children.
The original Darlings lived near the Brush Creek Cemetery in Fairfield Township and owned land there until about 1868. The Darling plot at Brush Creek does not have any marked graves for Wickham infants and the burial records are not complete. The existing stones are for members of the David and John Darling family members.
Grandpa was born in Windsor Township again in Fayette County. Frank and Lucy were renting land at that time. The Darlings and I think the Wickhams were of either the United Brethern or Methodist faith.
Does anyone really familiar with especially some of the smaller rural cemetaries know of any mysterious Wickham infant burials? We are probably looking at years between about 1872 and 1882.
