OELWEIN CEMETERY HISTORY
First Burial Occurred Over a Half Century
Ago, September 18, 1853.As the City Council has purchased
land for a new cemetery, it may be of
interest to our readers to know that
the Oelwein cemetery was first used
for burial purposes over fifty years ago
The following from The Register of
September, 1886 is self explanatory:
"The death of Elder Burch calls to
mind some interesting facts regarding
the first establishment of what is now
the Oelwein cemetery. The site was
first selected iu 1853 by Mr. Burch and
a man by the name of Isam Edwards.
They were looking over the land in
this vicinity, and while walking
across what is now the cemetery, remarked
as to its being a suitable place
for that purpose. At that time the
land was not grown over with underbrush,
though it was surrounded with
considerable timber. Shortly after this
Mr. Edwards was taken sick, and after
an illness of about a week, died at the
residence of L. M. Burch. A few days
before his death he went to this place
and selected the place where he desired
to be buried when he should die. and
requested that his friends lay his body
there. He was buried September 18,
1853, on the spot selected by him, and
was, we believe, the first white man
who died and was buried in this vicinity.
In 1854 Mrs. Lockey Collins
died and was buried on the same
grounds. The next interment was tnajt
of Mrs. L. M. Burch who was buried
there in March, 1855. Following this
waa Eliza Combs and child, in the fall
of 1855; Mrs. J. B. Birch, in December
1855; a man by the name of Coates,
in the spring of 1856; Israel Burlien,
in 1856; and Mrs H. Hanson, in 1857."Oelwein Daily Register - 11 Jan 1905
