Dies from Paralysis.
R. W. Helms, the leading citizen of Brainard, Fayette county, died from paralysis last week. Mr. Helms was driving an old and steady team. He held his grandson, three years old, in his arms. It appears that Mr. Helms was stricken and fell out of the buggy while still holding the child. The team walked a short distance and cramped the buggy so that a wheel was broken. Mr. Helms was 73 years old. He was a large land owner, a heavy stock shipper, was postmaster and owned the principal store at Brainard. He was a veteran of the civil war, a Knight Templar, and a member of the Masonic consistory at Cedar Rapids.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born July 30, 1839 and died Dec. 31, 1912. He is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Fayette County. IA.
