Dear Melvin,
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful story. My father, Fred, told me that his paternal grandfather, Maj. John B. Davis, had steamed up to the Big Horn to recover the remains of Gen. Custer. They received a box and returned to St. Louis with it.
John was a captain for Jo Diamond Lines and would take his son Sam out on the river summers, returning him in time for school in the Fall. They lived in Rock Island, Illinois, where Sam and his brother Tom became local tycoons. Sam's son, Edwin, was my Grandfather. -Dan Davis
