Goldie Evelyn Martin
August 30, 1926 - June 26, 2024Goldie Evelyn Martin, age 97, passed away at her Lamoni, Iowa home on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. She was born on August 30, 1926, the youngest child of George and Christina (Jones) Brenizer, at the Davis City, Iowa home.
Goldie graduated from Lamoni High School in 1944. Over the years she worked various jobs including being a telephone operator, a nurses aide, and an employee at Look Magazine before starting a 28-year career as the Decatur County Treasurer. She is recorded as the first woman county treasurer in Iowa.
In 1949, Goldie was married to Raymond Becker. They were blessed with son, Douglas Alan. In 1959, Goldie married Walter Vernon Martin. Vernon adopted Doug as his own. The couple farmed near Macksburg, Winterset, and Indianola, Iowa before purchasing their farm near Davis City, Iowa in 1963, with Goldie still owns.
Goldie was always willing to help others. She supported her grandchildren and great grandchildren by attending their school, 4-H, and FFA activities. She enjoyed gardening and canning and to this day all the grandsons' wives use her recipe for pear honey.
She was a baptized member of the Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church and remained faithful to God all her life.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Vernon Martin in 1985; and siblings and spouses, Wayne & Helen Brenizer, Mildred & Arthur Gilbert, Lois & Wayne Booth, and Cleo & Opal Brenizer. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Doug & Kathy Martin of Lamoni, Iowa; grandchildren, Doug & Tammy Martin, Clinton Martin, Erin & Tim Burton, and Andrew & Jenny Martin; great grandchildren, Treven & Morgan Martin, Darin & Kelsey Martin, Tyler Martin & Allison, Tanner & Kallie Burton, Matthew Burton & Gabrielle, Hailey Burton, Cody Burton, and Ethan Martin & Emma; great, great grandchildren, Grant, Oliver, and Grayson; a host of nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Slade - O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2024, with Elders Peggy and Donn Henson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.
Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Goldie’s memory.
