Notes for LEWIS CASS SALES:
DEATH OF LEWIS CASS SALES - The Leon Journal, 9 JUL 1908

Cass Sales, son of the late Judge Sales, was born in Washington County,
Iowa, September 4, 1850, died at his home two miles south of Leon, July 1st,
1908, at the age of fifty-seven years nine months and twenty-seven days.
Mr. Sales was one of the old and respected citizens of Decatur County,
having come to Leon with his parents May 24, 1856. The family moved to
Chariton in 1858, but returned to Leon in 1859, since which time Mr. Sales
has remained a resident of this county. On June 20, 1878 he was united in
marriage to Miss Dora Hoffman of Leon. To this union two children were
born, Frank B. Sales of Leon and Mrs. Mary Hall of Tolar, New Mexico. These
with his wife, his companion for a little over thirty years, his widowed
mother, and a brother, Frank Sales and sister Mrs. L. W. Foregraves, who
resides in St. Joseph, Mo., and three grandchildren survive him. Mr. Sales
had been in declining health for about three years and for the last seven
months has not been able to do any work. Yet was able to be up and about
the place, coming to Leon occasionally. He was in bed but 2 or 3 days
before the end came and was conscious almost to the last, speaking words of
endearment and recognition to his wife but a few hours before he passed
away. Mr. Sales was a man who bore a reputation for uprightness and fair
dealing in the entire community. Many kindly words of appreciation have
been spoken to him. He was a kind and loving husband and father. A few
days before his death he talked of his children; said he did not care to
have them bother after him in everything, by he wanted his son to be honest,
as he ever sought to be, and his daughter to be bright and happy. During
his last illness he was patient and very appreciative of the tender minutes
rendered by his loved ones. In his going a home is greatly bereft. His old
friends and acquaintances will miss him and will feel that one of a kind and
gentle spirit has gone from us. The surviving family all tender their love
and sympathy. God knows the depth of human sorrow and in this sad hour the
Christ invites you to come unto him and find rest. The funeral services were
held at the home south of Leon on Friday at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.
L. Boyd, pastor of the Leon M. E. Church, internment being in the Leon
Cemetery. The cortege which followed the remains to the cemetery to their
final resting place was one of the largest ever seen in this county.

From the same issue as above:
"Mrs. Foregraves of St. Joseph, Mo. arrived last Friday afternoon to attend
the funeral of her brother L. C. Sales. She was in Columbia, Mo. at the
time of his death and was delayed on reaching her on that account. The
funeral was held late that afternoon in order that she might reach here to
be in attendance."
