Decatur County Journal
December l6, l892

Many people are hoping that we will have a
white Christmas. It doesn't
seem like holidays without the merry
jingle of sleigh bells.

To those who are hunting for fine candies,
fruits, oranges, etc., we
unhesitatingly say go to AVERY & THARP's.
Their stock eclipses them
all.

We have a few of those ladies' wraps left
yet and will make the prices
suit your pocket book if you will give us
a chance. --HAMILTON &
GAMMILL.

The city officers have inaugurated a war
against the obstruction of the
sidewalks, with very good results so far.
Let the good work go on.

AVERY & THARP have the finest assortment
of confections and nuts in the
city. Don't forget this when you go to
buy your Christmas goods.

Our handkerchief stock is complete in all
details. You can positively
save 25 per cent by buying these goods at
our store.--HURST BROS.

Read the "add" of CLARK & MCCLELLAND to be
found on second page. They
are offering goods at greatly reduced
prices for the holiday trade.

We have a lot of gent's heavy underwear
which we are closing out at
reduced prices. Do you need anything in
this line?--HAMILTON & GAMMILL.

Farmers who have hogs to sell are
rejoicing over the prevailing good
prices for pork. The price is now from
$5.30 to $5.35 per hundred.

BUCKWHEAT DAY--We will grind buckwheat
Tuesday, December 20th, at our
mill in Leon, Iowa.--CLARK BROS.

The ten-months-old child of MR. and MRS.
JOHN HIMELRICH died last Friday
of congestion of the stomach and was
buried in the Leon Cemetery Sunday.

The young people will indulge in a hop at
the opera house Wednesday
evening, December 28th. The music will be
furnished by the Centerville
Orchestra.

Several of our citizens have had
counterfeit silver dollars worked off
onto them the past week. Where they came
from is a mystery. People
will do well to look out for them.

We notice that ED. R. NASH, who formerly
kept a music store at this
place, has been arrested at Salina,
Kansas, where he was running a
store, for inducing a l6-year-old girl to
elope with him. MR. NASH had
the reputation of being quite an "elopist"
while here, and it would seem
that he is still in the business.

At a meeting of the Women's Relief Corps
Friday, December 9th, the
following officers were elected:
President, MRS. ANNA ALLEN; Senior
Vice, MRS. HANNAH LOREY; Junior Vice, MRS.
BESSIE CROSS; Treasurer, MRS.
EMMA HARVEY; Chaplain, MRS. MARGARET
SMITH; Conductor, MRS. MARIA
CROUSE; Guard, MRS. NANCY PARSONS.

A change has taken place among the barber
shops here the past week.
BYRON HAMILTON has purchased COOK &
BURHAM's shop and will consolidate
the two shops. C.G. COOK will work for
BYRON, and GEO. BURHAM goes into
JOHN SCHAEFER's Shop. This cuts down the
number of shops, but has no
effect on the number of workmen.

Buy your wife a nice wrap, dress, pair of
fine blankets, nice rug, or
some article of value for a Christmas
present, any of which can be found
at HAMILTON & GAMMILL's, and after you
have purchased to the amount of
fifteen dollars at prices as low as can be
made by competitors, this
liberal firm will make you a present of
one of those beautiful arto's.

An exchange has altered a time worn rhyme
to suit the times in the
following manner:

Dirty days hath
September,

April, June and
November,

From February unto
May,

The rain it raineth
every day;

All the rest have
thirty-one

Without one blessed
gleam of sun,

And if any of 'em
had two and thirty,

They'd be just as
wet and twice as dirty.
