Decatur County Journal
June l3, l883As the N.G. is now working its way through
to our County Seat and
everything looks so cheery, the Gauge will
turn over a new leaf and so
what is on the other side of this
question. As for the Gauge it matters
but little whether this road goes to Leon
or not, but there seems to be
such strife between the East and West of
the county, would it not be
well to bury this strife and contention?
This county is not going to
see our little town scattered to the four
winds, and we believe our Co.
Board will give us the necessary bridge
over Grand River, if we are only
patient.Work has now commenced on the N.G.
BENT NUNN has taken the contract on the
road, and will work it for the
interest of the company.Quite a number come down on the N.G. last
night. There is some little dissatisfaction among
the people over this way on
account of the N.G., not because it is
going to Leon, but because it
starts out north of the Depot. Now did
not the company do as they said
they would? They gave us the depot within
the distance. Now would it
not be wise to wait and see what will be
done? Our interest is at Decatur and we will
stand to our town to the last,
but we are sick and tired of hearing this
old story repeated. Will this
heal the wound by harping over it all the
while? When the N.G. gets to
Leon then we can "shake hands over the
bloody chasm."There is some complaint about the
crossings North of town. This company
would do well to look this matter up.The Company has a saw mill in operation on
Little River, where they will
saw ties and all kinds of lumber.Quite a number were down from Van Wert
looking up a location. The farmers out this way are very much
encouraged over the prospect of a
crop. Those young gents who pass North from
Decatur, beware of the cars when
you hear the bell and whistle.JOHNNY KERWIN says he don't like to see
HANK TUVEY hanging around
Decatur so much. There will a grand Fourth of July
celebration at Decatur. Expect an
excursion down from Des Moines. Won't it
be grand.Sidewalks around to the M.E. Church.
I learn there is to be a wedding out
Northwest in a very short time.
You can't guess who it is. Well, we will
not tell.--GAUGE
