Bobby LaVerne Small

Bobby LaVerne Small was born April 14, 1933, and died April 28, 1983, in Jackson Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tenn., at the age of 50 years and 14 days. He was the son of Dewey and Nellie Rose Latta Small and was born and raised on a farm south of Bloomfield.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 at age 17 and served in the Korean Conflict from January 14, 1952, until May of the same year. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for excellent performance of duty. He was also awarded the Korean Service Ribbon with one Campaign Star.

After being discharged from the Army he worked for the Citizens Mutual Telephone Company in Bloomfield, Iowa, then moved to Woodbine, Iowa, and then Logan, Iowa, where he worked for the General Telephone Company. He also lived and worked for one year for a telephone company in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Since 1967 he had been Senior Sales Consultant for ITT Tele-Communications in Milan, Tennessee.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Milan, ITT Management Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He married Donna Jean Moore October 8, 1955, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Danny of Houston, Texas, two daughters, Coleen Davenport and Teresa Small of Milan, Tenn., one grandson, Josh Davenport, one brother, Dewey Ray Small of Pulaski, Iowa, four sisters, Mrs. Maurine Forsythe of Dysart, Iowa, Mrs. Norman Lee Smothers of Bloomfield, Iowa, Mrs. Shirley Ann Smith of Geneseo, Ill., and Mrs. Lucille Overstreet of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Bobby was a good natured, friendly person and a good provider for his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 1, 1983, at the Bodkin Funeral Home in Milan, Tenn., conducted by the Rev. John Pugh. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery at Milan. Pall bearers ITT associates and Bob Forsythe, Bill Nickells and Ralph Todd.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
