Gordon Dixon, formerly of the Bouton/Perry, IA area passed away into Eternal Life on Sunday morning October 2, 2011 at his home in San Antonio, TX. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, October 6 at Merle Hay Funeral Home with burial to follow at Chapel Hill Gardens. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m.
One of ten children, Gordon was born on July 21, 1912 to Henry Harry and Jane (Johnston) Dixon in Hiteman, IA. He worked for Thriftway stores in Des Moines and later managed Perry Lockers, retiring to San Antonio in 1977. After moving to San Antonio, he then worked as a meat cutter for several more years.
In all his years, Gordon never knew a stranger, only friends he hadn't yet discovered. One of Gordon's hobbies was fox hunting. While living in Bouton, he raised and kept hunting hounds and other dogs at a property near Perry, caring for all the dogs, including a few strays that came his way. He was also a member of Otley Lodge #299 in Perry for over 50 years.
Gordon had friends from all over the United States, and kept those friendships close with frequent phone calls and visits. When it came to friends and family visiting, the door was always open.
Gordon was married to Helen Kathryn McDermott in 1936. Together they raised three daughters and were a very loving presence in their grandchildren's lives. Gordon is survived by daughters, Elizabeth "Dixie" Powell, Mary (Bernard) Kersey and Kathy (Myron) Lindgren; grandchildren, David (Juanita) Powell, Holly (Kenny) Thompson, Nancy (William) Fellows, Kathie (Stephen) Brichant, Janet (Vernon) Kowal, Jeffrey (Karlie) Lindgren, Christopher (Sarah) Lindgren. There are also 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, Aislynn Powell. He is also survived by sisters, Bette Jane Bellizzi of Des Moines and Bessie Miller of Kokomo, IN as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, on March 27, 2005; son-in-law, A.W. Powell, Jr. on March 12, 2005; as well as his parents, seven siblings and best friend, Ernest Struve.
Gordon was lovingly known to his family and friends as "Poppy". He was well loved and will be greatly missed by all.
Memorial gifts may be made to Aspire Childrens Services, 1815 South Wolf Rd., Hillside, IL, 60162-2100.
