Howard Edgar Bragonier, s. of Jacob John and Matilda (Thomas) Bragonier; b. in Scott Co., Iowa, June 16, 1873.
Jacob John Bragonier, s. of Jacob and Elizabeth (Palmer) Bragonier, was b. in Franklin Co., Penn., Nov. 11, 1821. He was reared on a farm, and attended sch. in a log cabin. He was a farmer. In 1854, he settled in Scott Co., Iowa, where he became the owner of 695 acres of land. He was a Republican, and a mem. of the Luth. Ch. He d. in Nov. 1898. His wife, Matilda (Thomas) Bragonier, whom he married in 1845, was b. in Franklin Co., Penn., Dec. 4, 1826. She d. in 1893. She was a mem. of the Luth. Ch. They were the parents of 10 children, 3 of whom d. prior to 1882, and: 1) John 2) Abram J. 3) Caroline 4) Martha 5) David 6) Clark 7) Howard Edgar.
Jacob Bragonier, father of Jacob John, was one of the first settlers of Franklin Co., Penn. He was a farmer. He was a soldier in the Rev. War, and was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Oct. 19, 1781. He d. Oct. 5, 1821. His wife, Elizabeth (Palmer) Bragonier, whom he married in Md., was b. in 1775. She d. in 1859. They were the parents of 13 children.
H. E. Bragonier, the subject of this sketch, attended grade schs., and took academic courses, following which he farmed in Scott Co., Iowa. From 1903 to 1907, he was identified with the Estabrook & Bragonier Funeral Home, in Clinton, Iowa. He then purchased the funeral home of the Francis V. Hall Co., which he operated under his own name. In 1928, he erected his present funeral home at 226 Seventh Avenue South, in Clinton. The establishment, which is known as the Bragonier Funeral Home, is thoroughly modern, including a chapel, display room, and pipe organ. Mr. Bragonier, who is a Republican, is a mem. of the following: Masonic Lodge (32nd deg., Knigts Comdr., Court of Honor); Nat'l Funeral Directors Assn. of the U. S., Inc.; Iowa Funeral Directors Assn.; Clinton C. of C.; Clinton Chapter, Citizens Hist. Assn.; and M. E. Church.
On Sept. 27, 1899, Mr. Bragonier married Elizabeth Brooks, who was b. in Clinton, Iowa. Their only child, Ruth Anna, graduated from Wartburg Coll., in Clinton, and was a student of Coe Coll., in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She teaches in the grade schs. of Clinton.
