David Young, one of the county’s old settlers, died very suddenly last Monday. He had been in Osceola during the day and drawn about $250 back pension money allowed on his recent increase. After arriving at his home, in company with a son, he went after a load of hay. On driving toward the barn, his son saw him raise up from his sitting position on the hay in a peculiar manner and soon saw he was going to fall so he took hold of him and the two slipped off to the ground together. He died in a few moments, presumably from heart disease.

He was a native of Braxton county, Virginia, where he was born November 8, 1824. He came to Iowa about thirty-five years ago, and has lived in this county nearly all that time.

He was a member of the G.A.R. post in Osceola, having served in the 2nd Iowa cavalry for three years. The G.A.R. members gathered as a body to pay their last tribute to the old veteran. Rev. Robinson assisted by Rev. McCorkle, conducted the funereal exercises, after which his body was buried in the Harlan cemetery. (Union Chapel)
His wife and six sons survive him.
