Osceola, IowaGeorge Andrew McCann, 72, passed from this life Friday, June 13, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
George, the son of Cleyon Welber McCann and Agnes Lea Herron McCann, was born May 24, 1942, in Osceola. George attended school in Clarke County, graduating in 1960 from Osceola High School. Following graduation, George served his country as a medic in the United States Army.On September 12, 1970, George married Tana Sue Miller in Osceola. George and Tana had two children, Melissa Dawn and Matthew James.
George had three loves in his life: family, farming and friends. He spent most of his 72 years living on the family farm, where he was surrounded by family and friends. He passed along his passion for farming to his children and grandchildren. And nearly every day, friends would gather around the McCann kitchen table drinking pot after pot of coffee discussing farming, upcoming auctions, the neighborhood and community and world events.
While George spent much of his time as a farmer, he also was a well-known antique dealer. He also understood the importance of giving back to the community. He was a member of the Co-Op Board and a Knox Township trustee for many years. In his early years, he joined his Clarke County friends in the Rambling Riders Motorcycle Club.George had a passion for welding and restoring old furniture. He had a vision of making something useful from something many considered scrap. He used his talents to build most of the equipment he and Matt used on the farm (trailers, hay stabbers, etc.). He also enjoyed any type of auction and helped clerk for many auctioneers over the years. In recent years, he spent time with his grandsons, sharing his interest in coins with Carter and love of farming with Cole - even letting him drive the tractor.
