Henry Kirby arrived in Clarke County a couple years later with his parents Elias Sr. and Mary Johnson Kirby. Another married daughter Theresa Blanchard and family also came... as did his uncle's Elias Jr. and Joshua Kirby and their young families.
Henry Kirby was mustered into the 15th Iowa Infantry in 1864. He was captured in the battle of Atlanta, spent time in Andersonville prison in Georgia. He was released in a prisoner swap but died of disease a few days after being released.
For whatever reason, Henry Kirby's aged parents sold out and returned to Champaign Co., Illinois ... as did three of their sons, John, Elias Jr. and Joshua. The two married daughters stayed in Iowa.
Henry's wife, Mary Howard, had already lost her father, Joseph Howard, to illness after he enlisted at the beginning of the war. Mary Howard Kirby also sold her land and returned to Illinois and remarried. Henry Kirby's second daughter was born a few days after his death down in Georgia.
