Osceola, IowaElbert Dean Weaklend, son of Audrey James Weaklend and Wilma Lucille Hall Weaklend, was born July 19, 1946, in Osceola. He died unexpectedly on April 10, 2006, at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon. He was 59.
A lifetime resident of Osceola, Mr. Weaklend graduated from Clarke Community High School and Southwestern Community College with an associate’s degree. He was employed by Tablers Oil Company and Carr Conoco. He retired from the City of Osceola Water Department after many years.
Mr. Weaklend enjoyed reading and writing, especially poetry. He had several of the poems he had written published by the Iowa Lyrical Association. He was a member of the Rabbit Breeder’s Association and had contributed in many of their newsletters.
he loved animals and raised pigeons, rabbits, and rat terrier dogs. He judged many rabbit shows over the years. He was a member of the American Ribbit Breeders Association, Iowa State Rabbit Breeders Association, Indian Hills Rabbit Breeders Club where he served as the state director, Silver Fox Rabbit Breeders Club, the Cinnamon Rabbit Breeders Club and the Iowa Pigeon Association. He was a member of the FFA, a 4-H leader for 25 years and a hunter safety education instructor for more than 20 years.
Mr. Weaklend was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by a brother Doyce Weaklend of Des Moines; many cousins across the country including Ally Dulinsky and husband Jon and Sandy Logemann and husband Don, all of Osceola and an aunt Wilma Weaklend of Osceola; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services for Elbert Dean Weaklend were April 24 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Phil Coe of the First Christian Church officiating.
Casket bearers were Doyce Weaklend, Don Logemann, Jon Dulinsky, Jason Dulinsky, Frank Gale, Tyler Patterson, Mike Barratt, and Donny Tompson.
Interment was in Bethel Chapel Cemetery in Clarke County.
