Opal Grace Browns, daughter of James H. Carter and Grace Camp, was born March 9, 1911 in Clarke County, Iowa near Murray. She died after a lengthy illness at the Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown, Iowa on September 18, 1984 at age 73.
Opal married Richard Alfred Browns on April 9, 1932 in Bethany, Missouri. One daughter and seven sons were born to this union. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1971; one granddaughter, Robin Scadden; one grandson, Richard Henry Browns; beloved daughter-in-law, Jeanne Browns of Woodward; and one sister, Marie Cooper of Cypress, California.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Scadden and husband Arvid of Rembrandt; seven sons, Robert A. of Woodward; James L. and wife, Mildred of Beeville, Texas, Darrell and wife, Margaret of Marshalltown, Billie Joe and wife, Martha of LeGrand, Richard and wife, Carol of Omaha, Nebraska, Jack and wife, Joan of Marshalltown, and Jay and wife, Ellen of Murray; 27 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; four brothers, H. L. "Jack" Carter and wife Wilma of Winterset, Ira Carter and wife Genevieve of Spring Hill, Laurell and wife, Grace of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Harvey Carter of Diagonal; one sister, Mrs. Annis Jones of Murray; two brothers-in-law, Charlie Browns, Emmit, Idaho and Pearl Browns, Denver, Colorado; and one sister-in-law, Hazel Browns, Marshalltown.
Services were held Friday, September 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Murray Church of Christ with Pastor Marty Burgus officiating. A memorial has been established to the Murray American Legion.
