Obituary of G. K. Smith.
George K. Smith, announcement of whose demise was published in last week’s Reporter, was born at Worlenburg, Germany May 9, 1841. When six years of age he came to America with his mother, his father having passed away a few years previously. They located in new Jersey where they resided five years, then moving to Illinois where he grew to young manhood. He enlisted in Co. A. 141st Illinois Infantry and served his country faithfully. After his discharge, in 1866, he moved to Janesville, Iowa, where he resided until 1869 when he moved onto the Emmons farm, about six miles southeast of Nashua. On March 26, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Elizabeth Black and they purchased what is known as the G. K. Smith Farm and resided there until 25 years ago when they moved to Nashua. To this union seven children were born. Wm. P. died in infancy and Cora L. died Oct. 23 1915. The surviving children are Clara A. Keller, of Kent, Wash, Carrie M. Phalen, of Peoria, Ill., Geo. D., of Ryder, N. Dak, Celia C. Tobin, of Chicago, Ill., and Grace K. Singleton, of Spokane, Wash. His wife died Oct. 4, 1897. Oct. 1, 1899 he was again married, to Mrs. Harriet Smith, who with the children mentioned and her daughters Zephie and son Ray, of Waterloo, survive.
Deceased was a man, respected and honored by all who knew him and a most considerate and loving husband and father. He was an active worker in church and community affairs and his death will be sincerely mourned by a wide circle of friends.
The funeral service was held at the Congregational church Sunday at 2:30 p. m., Rev. Paul Pease officiating and burial was at Greenwood, the Grand Army having charge of the service at the grave.
