Clear Lake - Wesley Merrel Shubert, 75, 1611 Willow Place, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 3, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating.
Following the service, will be a Masonic service. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Visitation will be Monday, July 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. According to his wishes, his body has been cremated.
Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be given to Clear Lake United Methodist Church or the Wesley Shubert Memorial Fund.
Wes was born December 6, 1936, in Danube, Minn., the son of John and Savilla (Bratsch) Shubert. He graduated from Renville High School, Renville, Minn., in 1955. Wes enlisted in the military and served in the Minnesota National Guard while still in high school and later served four years active duty and four years inactive duty in the United States Coast Guard. While in the military, Wes attended schools and various universities studying advanced electronics and electrical engineering. Wes was released from active service as an EM1-P1 in 1959 and honorably discharged in 1963 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Wes was proud to have served in the military and felt it was an obligation not an option.
Wes married Marianne Martin June 24, 1960, in Renville.
After release from active service Wes began working with a company providing process controls for the water and wastewater industry. During this time he worked jointly with engineering firms designing the power distribution and process control systems for water and wastewater plants. To better understand the needs of the various processes used in water and wastewater, Wes began a study program in the field of biological and physical chemical engineering and treatment processes. Long before environmental issues became a popular field Wes was actively pursuing and involved in these studies.
In early 1967, Wes started Automatic Systems Company, Inc., in Ames, Ia. specializing in the design, supply and supervised installation of process control systems. In 1978 Wes became involved in the development of properties for clients with special needs. This evolved into development involving single family, multi family, commercial and industrial facilities. In 1982/83 Wes sold Automatic Systems Company Inc., to the employees of the company.
Wes continued to pursue development and do consulting work for engineering firms and industries as an expert in wastewater treatment. In addition, he began research on a new process which later became a very advanced biological treatment process.
In the mid 1980s, Wes did consulting work for a European company. He developed a marketing program, hired and trained sales and service people, wrote an engineering manual covering the products and their application.
Aqua Aerobic systems Inc. retained Wes as a process engineer and marketing consultant to develop a new product line and treatment process for them. This allowed Wes to put the finishing touch on his pursuit of the process that would become the AQUA SBR (Aqua Aerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor) process. Wes was instrumental in doing the pilot studies, design of the special equipment, on which patents still hold his name as the inventor. Wes was a published author of an Engineering Wastewater Process Design Manual, which later was used as a text book by some universities in the advanced study of Process Design in Waste Water Treatment.
Wes enjoyed the water and wastewater business and how it helped the environment and the health of everyone. Wes was instrumental in the process design for many wastewater treatment plants throughout the United States as well as some foreign Countries. He was called upon frequently as a consultant in Wastewater Treatment, Business, Marketing and Sales.
Wes was the key factor in the pump station and force main design and did the process design for the Clear Lake Sanitary District improvements. Wes served on the Clear Lake Sanitary District Board for 10 years.
Wes was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church and a member of the Ames Masonic Lodge Arcadia No. 269. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, hunting, having good - thought provoking - discussions, showing his 1936 five- window Ford coupe, dancing, farming, boating/playing on the lake with family, making others happy, attending his grandchildren's various events, and spending time with his family. He had an unspoken gift of friendship, knowledge, and charity to all he met throughout his life.
Wes felt his life was blessed by the love of his wife Marianne Shubert, Clear Lake; three daughters Tammy (Craig) Hartmann, Ames, Vanessa (Christopher) Edgington, St. Ansgar, and Marti (Jeffrey) Breit, West Des Moines; six grandchildren Shawnia Silverthorn, Seth (Emily) Bowen, Sarek Hartmann (special friend Brooke Rodriguez), Sean Hartmann, Alexander Edgington (special friend Erin Bethke and daughter Adysen) and Elizabeth Edgington; one great grandson Theron Silverthorn; brothers Stanley (Carol) Shubert, Owatonna, Minn., Wayne (Betty) Shubert, Comanche, Iowa, Gilman (Rhonda) Shubert, Kasson, MN; sister Shirley (James) Samlaska, Wis.; brother-in-law Jim (Ruth) Martin, Olivia, Minn.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Wes was preceded in death by his parents; his niece Valerie Martin and his in-laws Walter and Mary Martin.
Wes's only regret in life was that he felt he did not do all the things God expected of him.
