Funeral services for Donald O. Nelson, 81, retired Tipton businessman, were held at Sheets & Son Funeral home Nov. 28 with Dr. Jerrold Swinton officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery. Pallbearers were Alex Culver, Perry Nelson, Mike Bird, Matt Nelson, Don Armstrong and George Thordsen. Sylvia Gould was organist. Masonic services were held Nov. 27.
Mr. Nelson died at the Rowley Memorial Masonic home, Perry, Nov. 24.
The son of Otis W. and Clara A. Friederichsen Nelson, he was born at Arion Dec. 10, 1905. He graduated from the Dow City high school and attended Cornell college.
He was married to Evelyn E. Buss at Dow City Oct. 15, 1927. She died in 1973. He was married to Olive Challands at Perry June 1, 1984. She also preceded in him death.
Mr. Nelson was first associated with his father in the hardware business in a location on Cedar Street south of the Masonic building. The business was moved to the present location of Snyder Drug in 1948. In 1957 Nelson exchanged locations with a grocery store operated by Bud Waugh, moving to a location south of the Citizens Savings bank. The business was closed in 1974.
Mr. Nelson lived in Tipton for 52 years, moving to Perry 4 years ago. He was a member of Cedar Lodge #11, AF&AM.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Melvin (Betty) Bird, Mt. Pleasant; 2 sons, Donald L., Newton and Jack, Decorah; a sister, Grace DeLucia, Miami Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by a son.
