No marriage record has been found for 1William Emery and Elizabeth Unknown as of July 2012. Elizabeth bore him four known children: 2William J. Emery, 3James E. Emery, 4Thomas Emery, and 5Cecilia R. Emery, who were all born in Ohio.

The Emery's lived in Ohio and Iowa. As young parents they lived in Liberty, Montgomery, Ohio, where on 3 Jan 1837 their first son, 2William J. was born.

In 1850, 1William Emmary (census enumerator's spelling), was a 40 year old carpenter, who lived in Jefferson, Montgomery County, Ohio with his wife Elizabeth and three sons. 2William Emmary age 14, 3James age 7, and 4Thomas age 2 months. 2William and 3James attended school. No other records have been found for 4Thomas Emmary, thus it has been concluded that he died young.

On 8 Mar 1859, 1William and Elizabeth's eldest son, 2William J. Emery married Mary Elizabeth Gilbert, daughter of George Lewis Gilbert and Anna Elizabeth Eckart, in Darke County, Ohio, and made his home in Madison, Butler, Ohio.

By 1860 1William and Elizabeth Emory (enumerator's spelling) have moved from Montgomery County, Ohio to Harrison, Preble County, Ohio. The civil war was drawing near. The Emery brothers, 2William J. and 3James, would soon be called to serve, and to fight for what they believed.

2William J. Emery enlisted in the Union Army on 10 Aug 1861 at Camp Lucas, in Company K, 34th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, and was mustered in at Camp Dennison on 12 Sept 1861, Company K, 34th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. Mustard out on 8 Aug 1864 at New York City, NY.

Her son 15James Bruce, age 6 months, was born in Iowa. Her husband, John Bruce, age 23, was a painter, born in 1847, in Connecticut. 5Cecilia Bruce, was 18 years of age, born in Ohio.

Elizabeth had died by 16 June 1880, as the census states that 1William was a widower. On 30 June 1880 1William applied for 3James' military pension. No death record has been found for Elizabeth Emery as of 19 May 2012.

In 1880, Cecilia and her family were still living with 1William Emery. However, John Bruce and their son James Bruce were not there. 1William's new son-in-law, David Keller, age 43, day laborer and 8 year old daughter of Cecelia and John Bruce, Minnie M. Emery were residents of the Emery household. A marriage record for Cecilia R. Emery and David J. Keller married on 4 Oct 1884 in Polk County, Iowa. In the 1885 Iowa State Census, Swan, Marion County, Iowa, 1William Emery age 75, retired widower, born in Virginia, was living with his son 2William J. Emery and family.

No other records have been found for 1William Emery, therefore it may be safe to assume that he died soon after the 1885 Iowa State Census was taken.
