Hello Donna
My name is George McGowan. I have done much Genealogy since the late 1980's on my McGowan family tree. For years, I have been trying to make a connection to my Grandfather's brother who is George Patrick McGowan, and subsequently identify offspring. From reading your note posted on 11/5/2005, I am quite sure your Grandmother Blanche Fern Basom was married to my great Uncle, George Patrick McGowan.
Until now, I have had your Grandmother's maiden name shown as "Bason". From that, I have gotten nowhere. Based on some things my brother-in-law sent me, today I plugged in "Basom" and was delighted to fine your posting. I will now provide you with whatever information I have, and hope we will be able to trade data that helps both of us branch out on our family trees.
I have well over 1000 names on the McGowan family tree and I have developed a story of Rollingdam, New Brunswick, where John McGowan (George Patrick McGowan's Grandfather) settled when he and his wife arrived in Canada from Ireland about 1835 or so. My brother-in-law (K. Reynolds) developed a web site that contains his genealogy and he has included genealogy relative to his wife (my Sister) much of which is work I have done on lineage of my Mother and Father. If you go to the web site
http://www.telusplanet.net/public/reynok/ you will find this information.George Patrick McGowan was born on Feb. 17, 1874. He married Blanche Basom on Jan. 30, 1913 in Kootenai County, Idaho. According to McGowan Family bible information, George and Blanche had two children. One was "Ronald Bason(likely spelled Basom) McGowan" born Feb. 27, 1914. The other was a "George McGowan" who I have no other information on.
Earlier this year, I discovered and ordered a copy of a death certificate for one George Patrick McGowan. It provided some very good information that confirmed this to be my Great Uncle. However, with this information, I have not been able to get any further down this branch of the family tree. The only informant shown on the certificate is one Elizabeth Reed. I have no information on her. I would attach a copy of the certificate for you but I don't know how to do so within this Carroll Co. message system.
I also have a piece of information that indicates Blanche was born in South Dakota and that there is a death certificate # 524, for Portland, Oregon. However, so far, this information is flimsy at best. I have never obtained a copy of the Death Certificate so I can not be sure if this is the correct person. You have indicated she was born in Carroll Co., IA. I was wondering if you also live in or near this location, and have definitive information that confirms this location. Does the Basom family still live in Carol Co. ?
From your posting, I cannot tell if we are related or not. Was your Grandfather George McGowan or Loyal Burdette Hopkins?? Either way, it I would be very excited to know if you ever had an Uncle by the name of "Ronald Basom McGowan or George McGowan"?? Also have you ever heard of "Elizabeth Reed"??
Presently, I live in London, Ontario, Canada. I was raised on the same Rollingdam homestead as George Patrick and many other generations of McGowans, but I have lived in Ontario for the past 40 years. I am very much looking forward to hearing from you.
Kindest Regards
George McGowan
