Adeline Howard Riedesel, 86, died Oct. 27 at Kavanagh House hospice in Des Moines from complications following surgery. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Glidden at 11:00 a.m Wed., Oct. 31, with Rev. Brian Camara officiating. Burial will follow in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery at Glidden. A visitation is scheduled starting at 5:00 p.m. Tues., Oct. 30 at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home, concluding with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 a.m. Wed. where visitation will resume until the time of service.
Adeline was born in Sioux City on May 28, 1926 to Ellis R. and Gertrude (Hegstrom) Howard, the first of her siblings born in a hospital after two older brothers and a sister had been delivered at home. She grew up on the family farm near Lawton in the western Iowa's Loess Hills. She loved the outdoors and spent her youth riding horses and helping her father and brothers with the farming and livestock. Adeline played girls basketball and softball and graduated from the Lawton Community School in 1943, then attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI), earning a two-year elementary education certificate in 1945.
In the fall of 1945, Adeline was hired to teach first grade at the Glidden Consolidated School in Carroll County, Iowa. The superintendent interviewed and offered her the job on the phone. She saw Glidden -- her eventual home for the next 65 years -- for the first time when she arrived to start the school year. She met and married local farmer John F. Riedesel in June of 1948. To this union were born five children.
For 40 years, Adeline and John farmed in the Glidden area, retiring from farming in 1988. Adeline continued as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Glidden and Carroll until retirement in 1992. She also served as a school bus driver.
Adeline took an active role in the Presbyterian Church as well as clubs, sporting events and community activities. She loved the Iowa State Cyclones. Visitors during the baseball season usually found a game on her television. Spinal deterioration and degeneration forced her to sell her home and move to the Carroll Health Center in October of 2010.
Adeline was loved and appreciated for her friendliness; her commitment to school, community and volunteer activities; her selflessness; and an ever-positive attitude. She cared little for material things but deeply loved her family, church, and community, enjoying every minute spent with a wide circle of friends. Adeline never complained.
She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1995, son Miles in July of 2012, and brothers Wayne (Moville) and Bennett (Springville, CA). She is survived by sons Warren (Mary), Des Moines, and Calvin of Glidden; daughters Barbara (Jim) Iverson, Minneapolis, and Suzanne (Mike) Rinehart of Nampa, ID; daughter-in-law Patience Riedesel, Storm Lake; and grandchildren Grant (Laura) Riedesel, Chicago; Erin (Kevin) Bell, Des Moines; Julie (Jeff) Taggart, San Diego, CA; Reed Young, Brooklyn, NY; Shantry Riedesel, Marshalltown; Rachel Riedesel, Storm Lake, and Sean Rinehart of Moscow, ID. Also surviving are special friend and companion Cal Hughes of Glidden; Adeline's sister Phyllis Beeman (Burkburnett, TX); brother Robert (Beverly) Howard, Sioux City; sister-in-law Helen Howard (Springville, CA); and numerous nieces and nephews.
