Gaylord Sliefert, 76, of Dow City, died Friday, December 16, at Dunlap Specialty Care. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 21, at the United Methodist Church in Dow City with burial at the Buena Vista Memorial Park. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison is in charge of arrangements.
Gaylord Neil Sliefert was born March 19, 1940, at Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Alvin and Iva Madson Sliefert. He died December 16, 2016, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa, at the age of 76.
After graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1958, he earned his BA degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake in 1963 and later received his Masters degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He taught math and social studies for many years in various Iowa towns including Miles, Victor, Titonka, Charter Oak, Dow City and Boyer Valley. He also coached high school football at Charter Oak and Dow City, and girls basketball and also served as a football and basketball referee.
Gaylord was united in marriage to Sheila Elaine Grau on April 20, 1963, at the Nain Lutheran Church and were blessed with the birth of three children. Since retiring from teaching in 1998, Gaylord and his wife traveled to many places including Spain and Portugal, taking cruises to the Carribean, Alaska and Hawaii, as well as visiting many places in the United States.
In his leisure time, Gaylord enjoyed all kinds of sporting events, attending as many games with his children as he could. He enjoyed softball, basketball, football and golf, and followed the games of the University of Iowa, Creighton University and Iowa State University. His favorite baseball team was the Chicago Cubs and was excited when they won the World Series this past summer. He also enjoyed watching auto racing at the Indianapolis 500. He was a charter member of the Lions Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge and the AbuBekr Shriners.
Gaylord was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sheila; and one daughter-in-law, Amy Sliefert; in-laws; aunts and uncles.
Survivors include: one son, Michael and significant other, Linda; two daughters, Lorie and Dawn; two grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
