A BUSY DAY FOR THE POLICE COURTS
On Tuesday afternoon Mr. Edward Sweeny, a young man of prepossessing appearance claimed from Independence, Iowa was found by a policeman fast asleep upon the levee. As we have an ordinance which forbids open air sleeping and the officer was disposed to see that the spirit and letter of the same should not be violated, he very gently tapped Edward upon the shoulder and informed him that he was his prisoner, and soon after passed Sweeny over to another policemen with instruction to place him in the calaboose. The prisoner went along quietly until he reached 5th Street, when all at once he gave a mighty spring and started back for the levee again on a keen run, unmined of the shots which were poured after him by the officer Sweeny continued his mad career and soon across the heat of officer Palmer, … who at once joined in the chase and commenced firing also. It took seven shots to bring the runaway to a standstill and upon reaching him it was discovered that one of the balls had passed through his heel, inflicting rather an ugly and painful wound; so much so that Sweeny concluded that it would be inexpedient to do any more running, and went quietly with his captors to the calaboose. He will be placed in a boarding house for medical treatment. At last accounts the ball had not been extracted.
