Enlists in Volunteer Company

Dubuque Weekly Times, July 18, 1861.

O. Sawyer of Iowa Falls was desirous of enlisting in a volunteer company, and to do so started out 16 miles afoot to join the Eldora company. When he arrived at Eldora they had been gone twelve hours, having left in the morning. Nothing daunted however, Sawyer followed them on that same night, and walked through to Waterloo, a distance of fifty miles, and overtook them before they took the cars for Dubuque. There are not many men who would make a pedestrian trip of sixty-six miles within the space of twenty-four hours for the sake of entering as a private in a corps of volunteers. All honor to Sawyer.
