Paul Griesert, a progressive and up-to-date farmer of Sumner township, owning and operating one hundred and sixty acres of valuable land on section 15, was born in Germany in 1873 and is a son of Carl and Augusta (Matke)Griesert, also natives of the fatherland. The parents came to America in 1884 and settled in Chickasaw county, Iowa, where Carl Griesert purchased land, engaging in farming successfully for a number of years thereafter. He has now retired from active life and he and his wife now make their home in Fredericksburg. They became the parents of ten children.

Paul Griesert acquired a very limited education but has supplied the deficiencies of his early training by wide reading since reaching mature years. At the age of twenty-one he worked at a salary upon his father's farm and three years later began farming independently, renting land in Chickasaw county. After a year he bought one hundred and sixty acres on section 15, Sumner township, and upon this property he has since resided. When it came into his possession the buildings were in need of repair and everything about the place was in a run-down condition. Mr. Griesert has erected a new house and barn and is steadily carrying forward the work of improvement and development.

Mr. Griesert married Miss Cora Baker, of Washington county, Iowa. They are devout members of the United Brethren church and well known in social and religious circles. Mr. Griesert gives his political allegiance to the republican party and is a progressive and public-spirtied citizen, although he never seeks public office, preferring to devote all of his time to his extensive business interests.
