Henry Schumacher is the owner of an excellent farm of one hundred and ninety acres on section 33, Frederika township. He makes a specialty of dairying and has a well improved property upon which are good buildings. He was born in Maxfield township, this county, November 9, 1856. His father, Henry Schumacher, was born in Germany and when a young man crossed the Atlantic ocean to the United States. He made his way to Cook county, Illinois, where he lived until 1855, when he came to Bremer county, settling in Maxfield township. He was a poor man but anxious to gain a good living and he improved his opportunity of securing a claim by homesteading a tract of government land for which he paid a dollar and a quarter per acre. He was married in this county to Miss Anna Harr, also a native of Germany, and they remained upon their farm in Maxfield townsip until death called them. The father died at the age of eighty-four years and the mother passed away when seventy-nine of age. They were member of the Lutheran church and were well known and highly respected people. Mr. Schumacher prospered in his business affairs, added to his property from time to time, and became one of the large landowners of the county. In the family were ten children: Henry; Anna, the wife of August Buhr, of Waverly; Fred, who resides in Denver, Iowa; Sophie, the wife of H. Beekman, of Tripoli, Iowa; William and Mina, both deceased' Lena, the wife of Henry Gauske, of Dayton township; Carl, living in Waverly; Mary, the wife of Henry Platte; and Herman, deceased.

Henry Schumacher was reared upon the home farm in Maxfield township and when twenty-five years of age he began an independent career upon a farm of one hundred and sixty acres in the same township. Two years later he sold his property there and purchased his present place of one hundred and ninety acres on section 33, Frederika township. This was an improved farm when it came into his possession. He has since enlarged the house and barn, has added other buildings and has built a silo. This is one of the model farming properties of the township and everything about the place indicates his careful supervision and his practical and progressive methods. He carries on dairy farming and is very successful, keeping a large number of high-grade cows for this purpose.

Mr. Schumacher was married in this county to Miss Caroline Telschow, who was born in Cook county, Illinois. They have had six children: Fred, deceased; Ernst, August, William and Walter, all at home; and Bertha, who has passed away. Mr. Schumacher is a member of the Lutheran church. The family is well known in this community, where Mr. Schumacher has spent his entire life. He has many of the sterling traits of the German race and is regarded as an enterprising, progressive and reliable buiness man.
