A man named Pooler, from Polk County, was killed on the C. & N. W. railroad near Grand Junction last Friday night. He was walking along the tracks as a freight train from the west came along. The engineer saw him, and says he stepped of the track, and walked along the side, but just before the engine came along a gust of wind blew his hat on the tracks. With a carelessness that is inexplicable he stepped forward to reach for the hat, and was struck by the engine, and so badly injured that he died within a few hours. A deed to forty acres of land, and about $30 in money, was found on his person. A coroner’s jury at Grand Junction brought in a verdict of accidental death, in accordance with these facts, and exonerated the railroad company from any blame in the matter.
