Per Oscar Anholt was born in Grant Township, Boone County, Iowa on Oct 31, 1889, the 11th of 13 children born to John Adoph Anholt, Sr (1838-1922) and his wife Sophia (Carlson) Anholt (1848-1928). The parents were natives of Sweden, he immigrating in 1868 and she in 1875. The father was one of the first settlers of this township, arriving in 1869. After their marriage in 1875, they settled on a farm in Section 23, and spent the remainder of their lives. Both are buried in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery east of Boxholm.
Oscar Anholt was raised and educated here in Gtrant Township, attending courtry school in the Union Schoo District. On Jan 27, 1915 Mr Anholt was married to Miss Pearl Alice Rose Carlson. She was born in Grnt Township, Boone County, Iowa on Feb 2, 1896, the oldest of nine children born to Andrew C Carlson (1873-1941) and his wife Elna Louis (Stark) Carlson (1878-1914).
Andrew C Carlson was a native of Grant Township, with his father being one of the first four settlers in this township. The mother, Elna Louis (Stark) Carlson, was a member of the pioneer Stark family also of Grant Township. After their marriage in 1895, they farmed in Section 16, the father later moving into Boxholm after his wife’s death. Both are buried in Prairie Lawn Cemetery east of Boxholm.
T Mr and Mrs Anholt were born seven children: Dean H (b 1915), Paul R “Patty” (b. 1917), Merle W (b. 1918), Joe R (b. 1920), Pearl E (died in infancy in 1921), Mrs Harlan (Betty J) Johnson (b. 1922), and Robert L (b. 1925). Before their marriage, Mr and Mrs Anholt were both members of the Boxholm Methodist church, Oscar having been confirmed there in 1902. After their marriage, they joined the Evangelical Association at the Pleasant Valley Church in 1917. Mr Anholt served this congregation as a trustee and helped guide the construction of their church building in 1919.
After their marriage, they rented the Mungerson farm in Section 24, Grant Township, but soon moved to another farm in Section 15 immediately east of the town of Boxholm Mr Anholt purchased this 80 acres (SE1/4 of NE1/4 and NW1/4 of SE1/4) on March 5, 1919 for $18,500 or about $230 per acre.
On Nov 27, 1926 Mrs Anholt died at the early age of 30 years, leaving Mr Anholt with six small children to care for. On May 23, 1928 Mr Anholt was remarried to Miss Ida Marie Anhot. She was born in Grant Township on Jan 12, 1885, the daughter of Peter Edward Carlson (1842-1924) and his second wife Christina (Anderson) Carlson (1857-1892). (Ida was a half-sister to Andrew Carlson.) Her parents are buried in the Dayton Cemetery.
Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Section 27 of Dayton Township, Webster County, Iowa and purchased a farm there, selling their 80 in Grant Township. This farm was located three miles north and one fourth mile east of Boxholm. Mr and Mrs Anholt farmed there until 1957 and then retired and moved to Boone, Iowa in 1958.
Mr Anholt died in Boone on Feb 28, 1963, aged 73 years. Mrs Anholt lived on quite a few years, her death occurring on Aug 26, 1981 at the advanced age of 96 years, seven months, and 14 days. Both are buried in Prairie Lawn Cemetery east of Boxholm along with Mr Anholt’s first wife, Mrs Anholt is the third oldest person buried in Grant Township.
Of the old Anholt land in Grant Township, the east 40 is currently owned by Bob Petty, and the west 40 (where the home place was located) is owned by Glenn Stark. The house no longer stand, but the foundation is still visible. Their farm in Webster County was later occupied by Jens Rugaard. None of Mr and Mrs Anholt’s descendants currently reside within Grant Township.
