MARRIED for seventy years, still hale and hearty and happy! That is the record of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Atkins of Barclay township, Black Hawk county, fourteen miles northeast of Waterloo.
This venerable couple may not hold the record in Iowa, but it is likely they do, and the event will be celebrated at their home on Christmas day. He is ninety-one and she is ninety-three, and as both are in excellent health they will without doubt reach their diamond wedding.
It was way back in 1839 that they were married in historic Coventry, England, the home of their birth. Sixty-one years ago they crossed the ocean and settled in Newark, N. J. Later he built gasworks at Rutland, Vt., and Plattsburg and Whitehall, N. Y. In 1869 he moved his family to Black Hawk county.
The couple have five children, thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Their life has been without storm and strife and they enjoy life today as much as in their youth.
