Audubon County Journal,
Mrs. K. Madsen Dead
On Friday January 17th occurred the death of Mrs. Kersten Madsen, wife of Christen P. Madsen west of Kimballton at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 13 days, after an illness of about 4 years. She was born on the island of Oro, Denmark, Nov. 4, 1833 and was united in marriage to Christen P. Madsen, Jan. 18, 1861. To this union 7 children were born, the husband and 4 children still survive, two sons and two daughters. In 1874 the family emigrated to America and settled in this vicinity, where they have resided ever since. The deceased and husband with one other family were the very first settlers in this neighborhood, and knew and experienced all the privations and hardships of a pioneer's life. Mrs. Madsen was a devout Christian and was instrumental in getting a pastor [to] come here and preach for the few settlers who were scattered over miles of territory in latter years, and now when several large congregations are established in different sections around here her dreams of the future have been realized and her spirit has passed hence where pain and sorrow are no more. She was an affectionate wife, a loving mother, a kind neighbor and the needy were never turned from her door. The funeral was held from the church in Elk Horn Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Gregersen conducting the service, after which the remains were borne to the nearby cemetery and gently lowered to their last resting place by the side of a child who had gone before.
