Atlantic, Iowa - After 100 years of telephone service, there will be no more operators in Atlantic.
The Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. has replaced all manual switching in the Atlantic exchange with electronic equipment. Switching will now be controlled at facilities in Omaha.
The first exchange was opened in 1882 by the Iowa Telephone and Telegraph Co. of Cedar Rapids. A second firm, Musson Brothers, opened in 1900, and the two then merged in 1913.
Ten years later the merged company sold to Northwestern Bell.
Operators marking the end of personal service were Darlene Morgan of Atlantic, 37 years of service; Arlene Shaver of Atlantic, 29 years; Lois Petersen of Atlantic, 29 years; Eloise Madsen of Audubon, 39 years; Erma Andersen of Atlantic, 34 years; Naomi Best of Exira, 31 years; Mildred Auerbach of Atlantic, 36 years; Dolores Wakeman of Atlantic, 29 years, and Mary Lou Burmeister, chief operator, 32 years.
